There are three federal courts in Virginia. There is the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia, the District Court for the Eastern District, and Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. The United States District Court for the Eastern District and the Western District appeal cases to the Fourth Circuit. This does not apply to patent claims, and any cases that are against the United States Government. Both of those are taken to the Federal Circuit. The Court for the Eastern District has jurisdiction in counties of York, Westmoreland, Sussex, Surry, Stafford, Spotsylvania, Southampton, Richmond, Prince William, Prince George, Prince Edward, Powhatan, Nottoway, Northumberland, Northampton, New Kent, Middlesex, Mecklenburg, Mathews, Lunenburg, Loudoun, Lancaster, King William, King George, King and Queen, James City, Isle of Wight, Henrico, Hanover, Greensville, Goochland, Gloucester, Fauquier, Fairfax, Essex, Dinwiddie, Chesterfield, Charles City, Caroline, Brunswick, Arlington, Amelia, and Accomack.

The Court for the Western District is responsible for counties including Winchester, Waynesboro, Staunton, Salem, Roanoke, Radford, Norton, Martinsville, Lynchburg, Lexington, Harrisonburg, Galax, Danville, Covington, Charlottesville, Buena Vista, Bristol, and Bedford.
