How Minnesota Federal Courts Function

The Minnesota Supreme Court follows a modified version of the Missouri deal like many states regarding the appointment and election of federal judges. The Minnesota Federal Court has seven justices, and they are subject to elections for six-year terms. Also, the governor appoints any vacancies between elections. The last time there was an election for a vacant seat was when Alan Page, a retired Minnesota Vikings star, was elected in 1992. Finally, in Minnesota, the federal court judges must retire at the age of 70.

History of the Minnesota Federal Courts

The Minnesota Federal Court formed in 1849 with three judges selected by President Zachary Taylor. This was before Minnesota was a state, and it was just under territory status. After 1858, when Minnesota became a state, the court systems were rearranged. Until the formations of the appellate court in 1983, all appeals from the district courts were going to the federal courts. The Minnesota Federal Court still hears nearly 1000 appeals a year though. Now, the court mostly deals with appeals involving workers’ comp, taxes and first-degree murder.

Making Appointment to the Minnesota Federal Courts

Governor Mark Dayton made a history making appointment in June 2016. White Earth Ojibwe, also known as Anne McKeig, became the first Native American to be appointed to the bench of the Minnesota Federal Court, which again contains a majority of female judges. She replaced Justice Dietzen, who is now retired.
