Missouri Federal Courts – Locations, Hours & Phone Numbers
The Missouri Federal Courts are the highest judicial authority in Missouri. It was instituted in 1820, and its main base of operations is located in the capital of the state, Jefferson City. Despite being located in Jefferson City, there is an Eastern District and Western District set up to better handle caseloads. Missouri residents voted to give certain powers to the high court, so even as part of the judicial branch, it has a foundation of democracy. The Missouri Federal Courts have heard a number of historic cases dealing with serious issues, and the following are just three of many case examples:
- Doe v. Phillips, 194 S.W.3d 837 (Mo. banc 2006) dealt with the sex offender registry.
- Missouri ex rel. Gaines v. Canada, 342 Mo. 121, 113 S.W.2d 783 (1938), 305 U.S. 337 (1938) ruled on facets of racial segregation.
- Missouri v. Seibert, 93 S.W.3d 700 (Mo. banc 2002), 542 U.S. 600 (2004) tackled procedure concerning confessions and the Miranda Rights.
The Cases Heard by the Missouri Federal Court
According to Article V, Section 3 of the Missouri Constitution, the Missouri Federal Courts have exclusive judicial authority over five important areas. The first, and one of the most serious, is the death penalty for cases tried on the state court level. Also, the state’s federal court handles anything to do with Missouri’s revenue laws. Third, if a challenge arises to a politicians right to hold office, then it is the high court’s responsibility to rule. Next, the legality of the state’s constitutional provision or statute. Finally, it can make rulings on any treaty or statute of the country.
