The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) is a part of of New Mexico’s Taxation and Revenue Department. The Division handles testing, licensing, and monitoring drivers, as well as registering vehicles and larger motorboats. The MVD furnishes parking placards and license plates, including numerous customized plates. The MVD is also involved in the process of monitoring and checking emissions, which is required for vehicles registered in or commuting to Bernalillo County. A third-party vendor partners with the MVD to monitor drivers’ compliance with New Mew Mexico’s insurance requirements.
The MVD offers many services online; such services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Driver license applications must be made in-person, but the New Mexico MVD website provides real-time updates as to the status of the application. Citizens of New Mexico can also schedule a driving test online. Licensed drivers can obtain their own driver history record. Once licensed, a driver can renew or replace a license online and report any change in address. New Mexico drivers have ten days to report a change of address. Of course, citations can be paid online. Requests for refunds of overpayments to the MVD, however, must be sent via mail.
