You may conduct a motor vehicle records search only for a purpose permitted under the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act of 1994 (“DPPA”), 18 U.S. Code § 2721 et seq., as amended. By proceeding, you represent that you have read and understand the terms of the DPPA, and that you are conducting your search for a purpose authorized by the DPPA. You understand and agree that your use of this service and of the results of your motor vehicle records search for any purpose other than a DPPA permitted purpose may subject you to liability under the DPPA. Vehicle owner information is not always available. You will be required to attest to these statements again in the member's area prior to conducting your search. As required by the DPPA, we will retain a record of your request, including your name and selected permitted purpose(s).
New York Driver Record Search
A New York Driver Record is available for request from the New York Department of Motor Vehicles. The types of New York Driver Records available are the driver abstract and the lifetime driving record.
New York Driver Abstract
The driver abstract is a New York Driver Record that will include a summary of your driving information as required by the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law. The abstract will begin with a header of your personal identity information. Next will be a summary of your license information including the license type and expiration date. The activity section will include any New York Driver Education Courses you have completed and other relevant license notes. Following the activity section will be a list of any suspensions and revocations against your license, if applicable. The last two sections on the abstract are the convictions and bail forfeitures section, as well as the accidents section. Accidents and most traffic convictions will remain on the abstract until the end of the year in which the accident or conviction occurred, plus three additional years.
The fastest way to obtain your driver abstract is to create a MyDMV account and to order the abstract online. There is a $7.00 processing fee. Driver abstracts may also be requested by mail or by going to a local New York DMV office. If requesting the abstract by mail or at a local New York DMV office, the processing fee is $10.00 rather than $7.00. The form required for a postal mail abstract request is the MV-15, which can be found on the Department of Motor Vehicles website.
Lifetime New York Driving Record
The Lifetime Driving Record is a New York Driver Record which will contain your complete driver history regardless of data retention requirements found in the New York State Vehicle and Traffic and Law. Whereas the New York driver abstract will only contain the conviction and suspension information required to be retained by NY law, the lifetime driving record will contain all information recorded. There is only one way to request a lifetime driving record. To request your Lifetime Driver Record, you must send the MV-15 form, as well as a photocopy of proof of your identity and a $10.00 processing fee, via mail to the New York Department of Motor Vehicles. The form and additional processing information can be found on the Lifetime Driving Record page on the New York Department of Motor Vehicles website.
