New Jersey MVC – Motor Vehicle Department

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) is the state’s version of the DMV, so if you come across the phrase New Jersey Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) what is actually being talked about is the MVC. In recent years, the New Jersey MVC has strived to make its services as streamlined and hassle-free for New Jersey residents as possible, including by waiving many fees and increasing its online services. While in some cases you will still need to visit the MVC in person, you can find out which MVC office may be the fastest by checking out their New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission homepage, which features a list of agencies experiencing low volume.

How To Obtain New Jersey MVC Driving Records

To get a copy of your New Jersey Driver Abstract you can do so online, in person, or over the phone. Of course, applying online is the easiest option. To apply online you will need to sign up for a User ID, which requires that you have a New Jersey driver’s license. The online application costs $15 for both certified and non-certified driving records, meaning that you are usually better off just applying for a certified record. The application itself requires only your User ID, driver’s license number, Social Security Number, and billing information.

Alternatively, you could get a non-certified copy of your New Jersey driving record through a third-party database, including SearchQuarry.com. While such a copy may not be suitable if you need it when applying for a job or for insurance purposes, it could be useful if you are simply curious about what is on your 3 year driver record.

If you need to schedule a road test then you can do so online (as well as by calling the MVC or visiting them in person). The tests take about 10 to 15 minutes at an off-road facility and you will be accompanied by a safety specialist during it. To schedule a road test online you will need to provide your driver’s license number as well as your permit validation number. Keep in mind, however, that if you are trying to schedule a commercial driver’s license (CDL) road test then you will need to visit the MVC in person. CDL road tests cannot be scheduled or rescheduled online.

New Jersey MVC Driver’s License

If you are moving to New Jersey from out-of-state then you will need to apply for a New Jersey license within 60 days of your arrival. Remember that this applies even if you previously lived in next door New York and are still commuting to work in New York from New Jersey everyday. To get a new driver’s license you will need to visit the MVC in person and bring all legal documents and proof of New Jersey residency. So long as your out-of-state license is still valid then you will not have to complete a written or road test. However, if you are under 18 then you will need to complete the Graduated Driver License program regardless of whether or not you have a full license from another state. You may also need to cancel your license from your previous state. You can find out by contacting the DMV of whichever state issued your last license.

New Jersey Driver & Vehicle Forms

The MVC has a page on its website dedicated to New Jersey driver and vehicle forms. The list is very long, but fortunately there is a section near the top featuring the most popular forms. Chances are that the form you will need will be in this top section.

New Jersey Traffic Citations

If you need to pay a traffic or parking ticket you can conveniently do so online. As in most states, such as California and Illinois, payment for traffic citations is not to the MVC (or DMV) but rather to the courts. As such, you will need to pay for your tickets through the NJCourts website. The NJ Courts has an online tool for paying your ticket. You will need to have your license plate number and ticket number on hand. However, if you have lost your ticket number then you can perform a case search with just your driver license number.

New Jersey Vehicle Registration

If your vehicle has never had title then it is considered “new” and will need to be titled under New Jersey law. You will need to visit the MVC in person to register a new vehicle. If you are renewing your registration, however, you can do so online. The MVC will send you a renewal notice three months prior to when your registration expires. There is a PIN on your renewal notice that you will need in order to renew online. Also, you have a certain time window for online renewals. If you lose your PIN or you are outside of your renewal window then you will need to visit the MVC in person, call them, or mail them.

New Jersey Title Transfers

If you are transferring your vehicle’s title from another state then you should be aware that the process and costs depend on whether the vehicle has a lien against it and if it is leased. If there are liens or it is leased then the application fees are higher and you will need to submit additional paperwork. If you have a clean title without liens then the application is fairly straightforward. In any case, you can only transfer the title by visiting the MVC in person.
