Illinois Driving Records Search

Illinois Driving Records, also known as driving record abstracts, are provided by the Illinois Secretary of State (SOS). These records show a history of each individual’s driving within the state of Illinois and some personal information for the individual.

These records are important for various reasons. Courts may require that the record is used as evidence during a trial. Employers hiring individuals for jobs that require driving will review a potential hire’s history. Insurance companies will base a person’s premium off of their individual driving record.

How To Get Illinois Driving Records

You can obtain your Illinois driving record from the Secretary of State in two different ways. These include in-person and by mail. Currently, there is no electronic access to any Illinois driving records.

Official Illinois Driving Records

You can apply to get your driver record in-person at any local Driver Services facility within the state of Illinois. You will need to fill out a Driving Record Abstract Request Form (Form DSD DC 164). The cost for your record is $12 and is not payable by debit or credit card.

If you are requesting someone else’s driving record you will need to have a written consent form that was signed by that individual and properly notarized. These records are not available for immediate pickup from an Illinois Driver Services Facility. When requesting another person’s driving record you will receive it by mail in about 11 to 15 days, even when applying in-person.

Illinois Driving Records By Mail

You can request a copy of your driving record by mail. You will need to submit a completed Driving Record Abstract Request Form (Form DSD DC 164) along with payment for the $12 processing fee. Send this information to the Secretary of State Driver Analysis Section along with your full name, date of birth, license number, and sex. It typically takes about 10 days to get your driver record by mail after it is accepted by the Secretary of State.

It’s important to note that full records containing your personal information are only released to you, anyone that you have given written consent to, and anyone that falls under the Driver Privacy Protection Act exemption list. All public information, including convictions and accidents, can be obtained by anyone.
