What Is a DMV Printout?

A DMV printout is a summary of someone?s DMV driving record over a fixed period of time. The information contained in this report varies from state to state because every state in the United States has their own set of driving laws, regulations and record keeping processes. Driver?s licenses are issued at the state level, so DMV printouts are also issued at the state level.

What Does a DMV Printout Include?

  • Traffic tickets and convictions, including a DUI
  • Driver?s license status, whether active, suspended or expired
  • DMV Points System Information
  • Personal Information, similar to what is listed on your license.

What is the DMV Printout System?

Many states have some sort of driving points system, which accumulates points based on violations, accidents or convictions. The California DMV Driver printout, for example, certain moving violations stay on your record for either three or 10 years, depending on what the violation is. Again, this information varies from state to state, but as a general rule, incidents like traffic tickets and vehicle accidents remain on your record for a fixed period of time. That period of time varies depending on the state you live in.

In California, things like minor traffic violations, car accidents, and license suspensions remain on your record for three years. More severe offenses such as DUIs and reckless driving stay on your driving record for 10 years. Other states like Massachusetts and Connecticut have much more complicated point systems.

How To Get My DMV Printout

Generally, to obtain a copy of your own driving record, you can contact your state motor vehicle agency in which you are licensed. In general, each state has their own records request form, which is sometimes available online, which you can mail to your specific state driving agency along with a copy of your photo ID and a check with a processing fee (varies by state). You can also usually submit the above information in person at your local DMV. Finally, some states let you obtain records online, such as California and Maine. If you visit your state?s website, they often have links leading you in the right direction.

How To Get a 3 Year DMV Printout

The same procedures apply for obtaining someone else?s driving record that?s not your own. In many states, this is allowed if you are an employer that needs to verify information through background checks or if you have written consent from the other person. There are also several third party companies that offer driving record information, but it is not clear if these are reliable. Online 3rd party driving record websites can also provide DMV printouts however these are mostly for online reference only.

    William,

Unfortunately we don’t have a direct relationship with the Hawthorn Motor Vehicle Department however from our experience this is not an uncommon issue. You should be alright as long as you have your photo identification, confirmation number and know your appointment. You might consider arriving early to your appointment and getting a copy of your confirmation page. They should be able to print a duplicate for you with minimal cost. You will want to confirm this with the Hawthorn MVD. Here is their phone number … (800) 777-0133

  32. William Lee says:

I have made an appointment on 6/16, 9:20 am, at Hawthorne dmv office to have a written test in order to renew my DL. The confirmation # is 6090616170940. I forgot to print out the confirmation page. Can I just show up on the day without any printout? I am looking forward to hearing from you sincerely. Best wishes,
    William Lee
